Adulteration – what is the truth?
It is a fact that stories are heard about adulterated drinks, called "meths", mostly found in nightclubs. The truth is that most people believe in those stories.

Is this true?

Official statistics that derive from the controls of the General Chemical State Laboratory, confirm that there is no serious alcohol adulteration problem in our country during the last years and the "non- conforming" samples are constantly reducing.
The General Chemical State Laboratory describes as "non-conforming samples”, not only the adulterated drinks but also those that have gone flat, have differences in labels, etc.
Since adulteration is a very sensitive issue, in the following sections you can get information on the different kinds of adulteration and the consequences they may have in your health and pocket.
The encouraging conclusion is that adulteration in Greece is limited to low budget touristic areas or places with occasional clientele; the most common kind of adulteration is filling branded bottles with cheaper spirits.

Of course, the few incidents of adulteration should be completely vanished.  The issue is, beyond any doubt, the distribution of only authentic products of good quality to the consumers and all public or non-public bodies involved should head towards that direction.

On the other hand, the consumer should carefully select what to drink and where to drink it.

In the section
10 rules, you will find information on how to protect yourselves against potential adulteration.
